Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar has been appointed as the chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) with immediate effect.
Mr. Khullar, a 1975-batch IAS officer, will take over from J.S. Sarma on Monday. He will have a three-year term. His appointment, cleared by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, comes at a time when the telecom industry is fiercely protesting against the recent proposal of the telecom regulator on auctioning of 2G spectrum.
TRAI's recommendations followed the Supreme Court's February 2 judgement, cancelling 122 licences of nine telecom companies and asking the government to redistribute them on the first-come, first-served basis.
It is learnt that government has sought certain clarifications from TRAI on its recommendations for which a detailed response is being drafted. Mr. Khullar was personal secretary to Dr. Singh when he was the Finance Minister in the Narasimha Rao government.
